Osteopathic Manual Therapy (OMT) was founded in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still. He believed everything necessary for human health was contained within the body. Still proposed disease occurred because the body’s systems were altered by a structural disturbance impeding the body’s innate ability to heal. He went on to create a method of focused assessment and treatment of these structural disturbances, allowing the body to do what it does naturally… live.

Practitioners trained in OMT use a gentle hands-on approach to treat the body as a functional whole and help restore circulatory and neuromuscular systems by examining the intimate relationship between structure and function. Treatments are not focused specifically on symptoms, but on the cause of these symptoms. Because many parts of the body may be involved, practitioners learn to address issues in many systems including musculoskeletal, myofascial, craniosacral, fluidic and visceral.

After reviewing a patient’s medical history, osteopathic practitioners use their knowledge of anatomy and physiology along with precise, gentle palpation to determine the root cause of a symptom. A treatment plan is formulated and executed using a combination of gentle, hands-on techniques designed to remove strain from one or many systems.
